A dynamic approach suited to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges, simultaneously developing 21st-century skills while working in small collaborative groups is Project-Based Learning. The purpose of the study is to analyze the used model of Project-Based and Cognitive competencies-infused learning in the grammar class of English Language Education Study Program. This study employed a qualitative design where the data are the components of the existing models of learning in grammar classes of English Language Education Study Program. Besides, online class observation and grammar class syllabus documents are used as instruments. The findings of analysis revealed that Methods that generally used in the online class observation are <em>Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI), Scaffolding, Reciprocal method, Cooperative Learning</em> while mostly used <em>Lecturing, General Discussion, and Presentation</em> to delivering material. The indicator that could be seen in syllabus document and class observations was <em>Critical Thinking</em> from Cognitive competences indicators. R&amp;D was used and adapted from Richey and Klein's concept, with four stages of research including Need Analysis, Design Preliminary Product, Evaluation, and Revision. Literature study and observation were required during the design of ICT competences-integrated teaching models. The findings revealed that integrating ICT competences into existing teaching models was as knowledge deepening as the dominant ICT competences level in which students performed the ability to manage information and used open-ended software tools to access information, deliver the material, and collaborate with peers. This research mainly focused on finding what kind of myth existed in Pulau Putri and discovered how the myth protected the environment. The study employed two major theories namely Myth by Levi Strauss and ecofeminism by Jamie Thompson to shape the understanding of this research. The methodology employed in this research was the qualitative method. From the data collected through interviews with locals, the results showed that there was a myth told by the ancestors living around the area about a woman spirit. Furthermore, the existence of the spirit hence became the protection for preserving nature and also the environment. The data were taken from the utterances contained flouting maxims in the movie. The cooperative principle theory by (Grice, 1975) conducted for analyzing the types of flouting maxims. Observational method and non-participatory technique implemented for collecting the data. Furthermore, pragmatic identity method and pragmatic competence- in equalizing technique employed for analyzing the data. The findings revealed that there were 15 utterances contained flouting maxims uttered by the characters in the movie. There were 9 data of flouting maxim of quantity, 1 data of flouting maxim of relation, 4 data of flouting maxim of relation, and 1 data of flouting maxim of manner. &nbsp;Flouting maxim of quantity became the most uttered because the characters frequently flouted the maxim of quantity in the movie.</p> 2022-04-27T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2022 JURNAL BASIS AN ANALYSIS OF TEACHERS’ BELIEF IN TEACHING ENGLISH TO YOUNG LEARNERS 2021-12-15T13:45:31+00:00 Nita Kaniadewi <p>This study was aimed at revealing teachers' beliefs about teaching English at the elementary school level, especially the beliefs concerned with (1) whether or not teaching English at the elementary level was necessary and (2) the possibility of using a monolingual approach (full English) in teaching English at the elementary level. This study used a qualitative method in which the researcher interviewed 40 English teachers who taught at elementary schools in Jabodetabek (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi). The results of this study showed that in general, there was a need to teach English starting from the first grade of elementary level. Respondents believed that the earlier students were introduced to English, the better the results would be, considering the fact that first-grade students were still inside the golden age period. However, in order not to burden students, teachers must pay attention to the students’ abilities and characteristics. Moreover, respondents also believed that implementing monolingual (full-English) in classroom teachings was possible. To have successful monolingual teachings, it was recommended that classroom teachings resemble the process of first language acquisition. Furthermore, teachers should pay attention to the linguistic input they gave to students in such a way that it met the formulation of i+1. The purpose of this research was to analyze the types of code-switching on the YouTube platform, especially in the Deddy Corbuzier Podcast video that invited Chef Juna as a guest. This research was a descriptive qualitative to study a sociolinguistic phenomenon. The observational method and non-participatory technique were used for collecting the data. The types of code-switching were analyzed using the theory explained by Poplack. The researchers found there were three types of code-switching: tag-switching, inter-sentential code-switching, and intra-sentential code-switching. The result showed the most common type of conversation which can be found in the Deddy Corbuzier Podcast was inter-sentential code-switching. This research aimed to identify the types of translation methods in translating idiomatic expression and the quality of translation based on Nababan’s theory used in translating idiomatic expression found in <em>My Sister’s Keeper</em> movie. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through documentation because the data were taken from the dialogues of the transcript in <em>My Sister’s Keeper</em> movie. The result of this research showed that there were 109 data which contain types of translation methods applied in idiomatic expressions, which were; word-for-word translation with 14 data (13%), literal translation with 18 data (16%), faithful translation with 9 data (8%), semantic translation with 12 data (11%), adaptation translation with 5 data (5%), free translation with 3 data (3%), idiomatic translation with 29 data (27%), and communicative translation with 19 data (17%). Afterward, the raters indicated the result of the translation quality assessment showed that 12 data were scored less accurate and 4 less acceptable, all in all, other data showed a high-level accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The utterances of the characters were taken to be data of this research. It was analyzed by applying the types of declarative. The method of collecting the data was the observational method and non-participatory technique. In analyzing the data, the researchers used the pragmatic identity method and pragmatic competence- in equalizing. The results found out that there were 15 utterances of declarative acts uttered in “Cruella” movie. There were 15 declarative illocutionary acts uttered in the movie. The characters uttered declarative acts of a sentence, excommunicate, approve, and fire. There were some data in the movie, namely one data of sentence, four data of excommunicate, seven data of approve and three data of fire. It was found that the dominant type was the declarative act of approve. Id's</em> Minangkabau language Gospel application news. The researcher uses van Dijk's view in showing the relationship between social cognition and social actor in mass media's news. The researcher also uses Fairclough's socio-cultural approach in offering the relationship of discourse observed and socio-cultural perspective in the report. Thus, the researcher applies a qualitative approach with van Dijk's socio-cognitive and Fairclough's socio-cultural approach as an analytical knife. The study result indicates the person scheme and event scheme domination in the <em>Tagar. Id's</em> Minangkabau language Gospel application news. The two schemes play an essential role in describing Irwan Prayitno's figure as West Sumatera Governor through the Minangkabau socio-cultural reality. In van Dijk's point of view, social cognition is a form of effort in examining an event or events based on the characters' involvement in the news text. The figure of Irwan Prayitno as the governor of West Sumatra becomes a particular interpretation process for <em>Tagar. Based on theory Catford (1965). Also, theory Nababan (2012) for quality assessment. This research used a descriptive–qualitative method. To achieve the aims of this study, the researcher used some techniques to analyze the data such as reading and collecting data, underlining the type of category shift in the text of the novel, categorizing types of translation shift, assessing translation accuracy, assessing translation readability and acceptability. Based on the data analysis, it was found that 92% of the data were accurate because the category shift of noun phrase in the target language has equivalent meaning with the source language; 6% of the data were less accurate because the category shift of noun phrase had no equal meaning with the source language and the equivalence seemed less natural, and 2% of the data were not accurate. Meanwhile, 93% of the data were readable because the translation was very easy to understand; 5% of the data were less readable because the translation was not very easy to understand, and 2% of the data were unreadable because the translation was difficult to understand. Furthermore, 92% of the data were acceptable because the translation sounds natural; the words, phrases, clauses, and sentences of the source text, 6% of data were less acceptable, and 2% of data were not acceptable. The data were the components of models of learning in five writing courses syllabuses of five different universities along with their teaching and learning activities. A qualitative research design was employed in conducting this study followed by document analysis and observation as the instruments. The result showed that the existing models of learning mostly employed Direct Instruction and Computer-Assisted Instruction which are supported by Behavioral Approach, and Reciprocal Teaching and Scaffolding which are supported by Cognitive Approach. The employment of Project-Based Learning and the accommodation of Intrapersonal &amp; Interpersonal Competences mostly occurred merely in the component of Technique; Teaching and Learning Activities. In employing Project-Based Learning, none of the universities employed Project Manager indicator. Also, in accommodating the Intrapersonal Competences, none of the universities put them to the first component of Approach: Course Description. Strategy is needed to deliver communication with meaning and purpose to be conveyed and interpreted properly. This study aimed to identify and analyze the politeness strategy used in the “17 Again” movie script. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach in research. The movie script of “17 Again” is used as a data source in this research. This research used Brown and Levinson theory about the types of politeness strategies. The results of the study found that there were 15 data politeness strategies found in the movie script, which were divided into: positive politeness (4), negative politeness (2), bald-on record (6), and off record (3). This research has significances which are theoretically and practically. This research theoretically is expected to contribute about future research in pragmatics especially for the types of politeness strategy. The use of restricted codes and elaborated code by the main character Gary ‘Eggsy’ Unwin in the movie and how they convey the concept of English gentleman was investigated by applying the descriptive qualitative method. The movie script and the scenes in the movie were the data that were being analysed. Data were collected through observation using a non-participatory technique. The data were analysed using the Barthesian semiotic analysis method. It was found that there were seven types of restricted codes namely secrecy, intimacy, novelty, jocularity, sympathy, expressiveness, and nominative. While the use of elaborated code was found in the forms of verbal and non-verbal communications. Onomatopoeia was when the sound of a word imitated what the word referred to. One of those movies was How To Train Your Dragon. Moreover. Words can be categorized as onomatopoeia if it fulfilled a certain condition and divided into three types of onomatopoeia. However there were types of sound that explained the processes and sources of that sound of words. Because of that, this study wanted to analyze those two topics from the aspect of the references to the meaning of the signs. The data were collected and analyzed in five steps: 1) downloading the movie script from <em></em>, 2) transcribing in table of analysis, 3) analyzing the semiotic aspects of onomatopoeia using Peircian model and 4) classifying their types using Bredin’s theory and then 5) analyzing the process of onomatopoeia using semantic extension. This research found twenty one onomatopoeia that consist of thirteen direct onomatopoeia, six associative, and two exemplary. Also, the researcher have been gathered the type of sound. They were two voice – human, six voices – non-human, and twenty three noises, or sound produced by non-living this. The aims of this research were (1) to find out the language learning strategies used by the students based on their personality factors (2) to observe the extent to which the personality factors and language learning strategies correlate with speaking skill, (3) to elaborate the interplay of personality factors and language learning strategies in developing students’ speaking skill. 25 students in the fourth semester of 2015/2016 class of English Education Department at Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (STKIP) Muhammadiyah Bone were selected by purposive sampling. The research employed mixed method of descriptive quantitative (correlation) and descriptive qualitative analysis. Quantitative data were collected first from questionnaires and speaking test and qualitative data from interview. The results of the research indicated that most of extrovert students prefer to use indirect learning strategies (69%) while introvert students prefer to use direct learning strategies (89%). The correlation of personality factors and speaking skills was low (r=0.08), whereas the correlation of language learning strategies and speaking skill was strong (r=0.6). Therefore, the interplay of personality factors and language learning strategies showed that personality factors contribute to important roles in choosing the appropriate language learning strategies in developing speaking skill.</p> 2022-04-27T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2022 JURNAL BASIS INVESTIGATING EFL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS' METACOGNITIVE AWARENESS IN WRITING 2022-03-25T07:02:01+00:00 Yoannes Yuka Krisdianata Paulus Kuswandono <p>Metacognitive awareness was beneficial when implemented in learning activities, especially in writing skills. This research was conducted to explore students’ metacognitive awareness in writing. The participants were 30 high school students. Metacognitive knowledge and regulation from Brown (1987) and Knospe (2018) were employed to get a report on students’ awareness in writing. Metacognitive knowledge is formed from declarative knowledge, procedural knowledge, and conditional knowledge, all of which consisted of planning, monitoring, and evaluating. A cross-sectional survey method was conducted to investigate the data collected. Questionnaires were used to collect the data, then analyzed partially using descriptive analysis, and reported in tables. The data displays that the declarative knowledge and task were respectively 35.1 % and 17.3%; procedural knowledge was 27.7 %; and, conditional knowledge was at 14.2%. Likewise, the results from Metacognitive regulation reported by senior high school students were planning 14.4%, monitoring 24%, and evaluating 11.1%, all of which are categorized at a low level of understanding. Disney stories had become part of a show culture that has evolved into the reproduction of gender roles. This study was conducted to find the female representation as a heroine depicted in the Disney renaissance as well as to analyze the reasons how Disney heroines struggle in claiming their equality as a woman in their society. This study was categorized into qualitative and descriptive research methods. Furthermore, this study used the theory of the renowned feminist existentialism by Simone de Beauvoir, one of the Feminist icons and Philosophers of existentialism, with her book; The Second Sex, Beauvoir represented the section of the independent woman; a woman could choose independence, which means continuing to carry out the process toward freedom without having the insight of a predetermined goal. Therefore, this study aimed to elaborate how the female representation as the women to fight their equality to their desire for freedom. That is systematically arranged in disciplinary research to develop knowledge and obtain the object study. To implement this research the writer uses the methodology with a qualitative approach which results in descriptive data and the object under study is the Islamic religious of Malay Batu Bara. In collecting data researchers use the power of primary and secondary data. In analyzing the data researchers use data reduction, data presentation, and concluding that do data verification. Then in the validity of the data the researcher uses the degree of trustworthiness, dependability, and certainty. In the scientific , researchers use anthropology history. Researchers found many historic sites in Batu Bara which are very close. They are Kubah Datok Batu Bara, Sumur Istana Niat Lima Laras and Meriam Bogak. From the three historic sites, the researcher found a theoretical component from religion as said by C.Y.Glock and R. Stark that is the dimension of faith, dimension ritualistic, dimension experiential, dimension consequential, and dimension intellectual. Besides that researchers also found religious Malay Batu Bara community also influenced by beliefs in occult things such as witchcraft, rituals rejecting reinforcements, sea spells, and also related to beliefs in traditions or customs such as abstinence forbids, tapai party and balimau bathing.</p> 2022-04-27T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2022 JURNAL BASIS
