To know and understand the meaning behind the utterances, EFL learners can employ illocutionary force by analyzing the native speakers' daily communication of slang words. Therefore, this qualitative research aimed to explore the types of slang words and the illocutionary force behind the utterances in the Rampage movie. The data were collected from the movie transcript and analyzed using document analysis to explore the types of slang words and the illocutionary force. The analysis results revealed that all types of slang words were discovered in the movie, and the most used type was imitative, which occurred 14 times. The illocutionary force that underlined the characters implementing the slang words was to show that the speakers have higher status than the interlocutor, understand what they need to do in certain situations, ask other people to do something, want to show their psychological state, and they want to give a promise. The results of this study would enrich EFL learners' knowledge of slang words in particular and their vocabulary items in general.
Ayu Ratri Ouda Teda Ena Barli Bram Copyright (c) 2022 JURNAL BASIS https://scholar.google.co.id/citations?user=wxzwHfAAAAAJ&hl=id&authuser=3 2022-10-22 2022-10-22 9 2 121 132 10.33884/basisupb.v9i2.6360 SELF-DISCOVERY: PSYCHOANALYSIS OF THE FILM BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY (2018) https://ejournal.upbatam.ac.id/index.php/basis/article/view/5495
This study focuses on the discussion of self-discovery and its depiction reflected in the film Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). The objective of this library research is to identify the concept of self-discovery as well as to analyze the issue of self-discovery portrayed in the film. The primary data needed for analysis was acquired from dialogs along with the descriptions of film scenes. This study used Freud’s psychoanalytic approach to analyze the data. From the psychoanalysis point of view, the results of the study suggested that self-discovery is strongly related to one’s self - a person’s life journey to search for his true self or the life he wants. The results of analysis also showed that self-discovery was portrayed in the film through several images such as a unique style or physical appearance, loneliness and disclosure of sexual orientation.
Rudy Rudy Irvan Ricardo .N. With this domination Mother's courage lived in the nineteenth century, when patriarchal customs were still firmly held by the community. Women were still enslaved by male superior and the character of the Mother Courage opposes her domination by doing various struggles. This research uses feminist existentialism (Beauvoir S. , 1949) encourages women to step outside the boundaries and social circles that make them lose their freedom for themselves. This research is a qualitative research that produces descriptive data. This study uses content analysis techniques, starting with looking for similarities in data, combining them into a single unit in subchapters, critical and evaluative studies with the help of Beauvoir's social theory. The researcher's findings regarding the movements described in the play "Mother Courage and Her children" are as follows: In the study of women's struggles, Simone de Beauvoir's theory is highly valued because women are involved in various struggles in an effort to overcome themselves. The result show women can improve themselves in the face of gender inequality that is driven by men. This shows when women struggle to prove that women are capable of working, intellectually capable, capable of being fearless women and also able to resist public policies.
Juita Simamora Robby Satria Copyright (c) 2022 JURNAL BASIS https://scholar.google.co.id/citations?user=wxzwHfAAAAAJ&hl=id&authuser=3 2022-10-22 2022-10-22 9 2 145 156 10.33884/basisupb.v9i2.5658 EVALUATIVE LANGUAGE FEATURES ON HOAX RELATED TO METH DRUGS IN DEALING WITH COVID 19 VIRUS https://ejournal.upbatam.ac.id/index.php/basis/article/view/5607
Hoax news related to Covid 19 pandemic was spread in the US. In some cases, it is rather difficult to differentiate between real and fake news. Therefore, this study has an aim to analyse the evaluative features of online news using appraisal theory on the attitude subsystem. The appraising items focused on attitude division in the Huzlers about Corona Virus published in 2020 as the fake news and NBC news in 2012 as the real news regarding to the use of Meth to deal with Flu virus. Both news are American Media and were published online. This main purpose of this research is to explain the realization of fake and real news with the similar topics. The data used in this study was taken from Huzlers and NBC news and was collected in three steps: comparing, intensive reading, and transcribing. Moreover, the data were analysed into three steps: classifying, categorizing and analysing using Attitude theory which is one of appraisal theory aspects in SFL discourse semantics (Martin, J. R., & Rose 2007, Martin & White 2005, Martin 2019). The results of this study found that both news, real and fake news are dominated by appreciation. However, in fake news there is a tendency that the positive polarity is used to favour meth drugs, meanwhile in real news, it shows the polarity in balance. In addition, in fake news, there is also a tendency to use judgment to appraise the people involved in the meth drugs research.
Anleny Situmeang Muhammad Hafiz Kurniawan Copyright (c) 2022 JURNAL BASIS https://scholar.google.co.id/citations?user=wxzwHfAAAAAJ&hl=id&authuser=3 2022-10-22 2022-10-22 9 2 157 170 10.33884/basisupb.v9i2.5607 ERROR ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH TO INDONESIA SUBTITLE IN THE WAY WAY BACK MOVIE https://ejournal.upbatam.ac.id/index.php/basis/article/view/5884
This research aims to find the error analysis that can be found in The Way, Way Back (2013) movie. This novel talks about social class conflicts that occur in the United States. Where two suitors from different classes compete for the one woman they love. This thesis uses a sociological approach and analyzes the distribution of social class in this novel and the social class conflicts that occur in this novel. In this thesis, the writer uses sociology of literature theory and social class theory to analyze the novel. The method used in writing this thesis is a qualitative descriptive method. This class difference is created because of the existence of social class groups, where they classify their social class, namely the upper class and the middle class. Where the upper class does not want to accept the middle class into their class. Differences in social class are measured by power or wealth, privileges and prestige that affect the position, lifestyle, habits and behavior between the upper and middle classes so that the gap between the two classes is so striking. The conflict that occurs is the gap in social status in life or family relationships. This gap affects the thinking of upper families who cannot accept any class group lower than them to enter their family. The theory used is the theory of sociology with experts Max Weber and Karl Max.
Manuela Indriati Siahaan Robby Satria Copyright (c) 2022 JURNAL BASIS https://scholar.google.co.id/citations?user=wxzwHfAAAAAJ&hl=id&authuser=3 2022-10-22 2022-10-22 9 2 204 212 10.33884/basisupb.v9i2.5775 CATEGORY SHIFTS AND ITS QUALITY IN “TO ALL THE BOYS: ALWAYS AND FOREVER” MOVIE SUBTITLES https://ejournal.upbatam.ac.id/index.php/basis/article/view/6240
This research aimed to analyze Category shifts; Structure-shift, Class-shift, Unit shift, and Intra-system by Catford (1965) in female-lead utterances in To All The Boys: Always and Forever (2021) movie subtitles, to identify the most dominant shift and the quality of translation used quality assessment of translation theory by Nababan (2012). In order to survive, one of the most important examples is the need for safety needs. The phenomenal drama Othello by Shakespeare was chosen as the main data source in this research. This research aimed to analyze the unfulfilled of safety needs in the form of anxiety and its impact on the main character in Shakespeare's drama "Othello". This drama was set in 1603 with a tragedy and was written by the world-famous playwright William Shakespeare. The story that ended in tragedy is inseparable from the anxiety used by others to overthrow power and the Othello family. With these problems, the researchers explored the anxiety factor by using Maslow's psychological theory about the hierarchy of needs, especially at the level of safety needs. This research used qualitative descriptive method because the data collection technique used is to describe the analysis through words and sentences that exist in the data source. The approach used in this research was psychological approach in a literary work. The results found from this research that there is an anxiety factor that underlie Othello's feeling that he is always threatened. Jealousy is a factor that causes anxiety in the character "Othello" which focused on household relationships.
