THE REPRESENTATION OF THE VATICAN THROUGH THE LENS OF AMERICAN IDEOLOGY IN THE FILM CONCLAVE (2024)

Artikel ini mengkaji bagaimana Vatikan direpresentasikan melalui lensa ideologi Amerika dalam film Conclave (2024) dengan menggunakan teori representasi dari Stuart Hall, khususnya pendekatan intensional (intentional approach). Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif melalui analisis tekstual terhadap struktur naratif, karakter, dialog, serta simbol-simbol visual seperti ruang tertutup, penyegelan lilin merah, asap hitam dan putih, dan prosedur isolasi teknologi selama konklaf untuk mengidentifikasi pola makna ideologis yang tertanam dalam film tersebut. Analisis menunjukkan bahwa film ini secara sengaja membangun Vatikan sebagai institusi sakral yang sekaligus berfungsi sebagai arena politik yang ditandai oleh kerahasiaan, intrik, serta konflik antara faksi progresif dan konservatif. Dengan demikian, praktik keagamaan digeser menjadi drama kekuasaan yang sejalan dengan kecurigaan khas ideologi Amerika terhadap institusi yang tertutup. Tokoh-tokoh seperti Kardinal Tremblay dan Joshua Adeyemi direpresentasikan sebagai simbol korupsi, kemunafikan, dan ambisi politik, sementara Kardinal Lawrence dan Vincent Benitez digunakan untuk menyisipkan nilai-nilai liberal Amerika seperti individualisme moral, transparansi, inklusivitas, dan reformasi, termasuk melalui figur seorang Paus interseks sebagai metafora “kemurnian baru”.
Artikel ini menyimpulkan bahwa Conclave tidak hanya menampilkan Vatikan sebagai pusat spiritual Katolik, tetapi juga secara sengaja memproyeksikan dan menegosiasikan hegemoni nilai-nilai Amerika dalam citra sebuah institusi transnasional. Dengan demikian, film ini turut memengaruhi cara audiens global memahami hubungan antara kesakralan, kekuasaan, dan ideologi dalam representasi sinematik.
