COLONIAL DOMINATION AND INDIGENOUS RESISTANCE IN AVATAR (2009): A POSTCOLONIAL ANALYSIS

Ringkasan
Penelitian ini mengkaji representasi kekuasaan kolonial dan perlawanan masyarakat adat dalam film Avatar karya James Cameron melalui perspektif pascakolonial. Film tersebut menggambarkan konflik antara penjajah manusia dan bangsa Na’vi sebagai penduduk asli Pandora, yang mencerminkan pola ekspansi kolonial dan eksploitasi sumber daya sebagaimana terjadi dalam sejarah kolonialisme. Penelitian ini menerapkan teori pascakolonial yang dikemukakan oleh Edward Said, Homi K. Bhabha, dan Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak untuk menganalisis struktur ideologis yang terdapat dalam film tersebut. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan memfokuskan analisis pada unsur naratif, representasi tokoh, dialog, serta simbolisme visual. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa korporasi manusia merepresentasikan dominasi kolonial, eksploitasi ekonomi, dan imperialisme budaya, sementara bangsa Na’vi mencerminkan identitas masyarakat adat, harmoni ekologis, serta bentuk perlawanan kolektif. Tokoh Jake Sully menggambarkan konsep hibriditas, di mana transformasinya dari agen kolonial menjadi anggota komunitas pribumi menantang oposisi biner antara penjajah dan yang dijajah. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa Avatar berfungsi sebagai narasi pascakolonial yang mengkritik ideologi imperialisme serta menyoroti pentingnya perlawanan masyarakat adat, identitas budaya, dan keseimbangan lingkungan dalam menghadapi praktik kolonial maupun neo-kolonial.
